Johan DeLeeuw
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Johan DeLeeuw started training in Muay Thai at the age of 14 after being inspired by the fights he saw on TV. He started training at Thai Boxing Heerenveen with Stefan Berkenpas. Stefan Berkenpas was a Mejiro Gym Amsterdam Fighter and he introduced Johan to his gym, where he trained with multiple world champions, such as Rob Kaman (WKA, ISKA, IKBF, 9 time IMF World Champion), Andre Mannaart (3 time WKA World Champion), Bob Schreiber en Remy Bonjasky (K-1 2003, 2004, 2008 Champion, WPKA World Champion).
Johan progressed in training and won his first fight a year later against Jan-Theo Borrel. He eventually became Stefan Berkenpas’s assistant trainer and continued to fight frequently until he moved to Atlanta, GA in 1998 to become a chef in one of Atlanta’s exclusive hotels. He now operates Olympus Worldwide Chauffeured Services in Atlanta. Johan joined Pedro Solano Villalobos at his first fight school in Atlanta and fought two fights under this academy and won both in 2000. He went on a brief hiatus for a few years before joining Diego Saraiva and Koon Lau in the opening of Team Octopus, where he helps fighters with their striking techniques.
Johan and Mejiro Gym trainers are still in frequent contact, discussing ideas and keeping up with the latest developments to prepare Team Octopus fighters. This way, Johan feels he can give back to the sport that gave so much to him.
